Advances in Women’s Cardiac Electrophysiology: Arrhythmia Mechanisms, Imaging, Ablation and Cardiovascular Health across Lifespan

Cardiac electrophysiology remains a critical yet underexplored frontier in the study of sex specific cardiovascular health. Despite cardiovascular disease being the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among women globally, women remain underrepresented in clinical trials, and the influence of biological sex on electrophysiologic mechanisms, arrhythmia burden, and treatment outcomes continues to be insufficiently studied. Recent findings emphasize that hormonal transitions, menopause, pregnancy, metabolic factors, and systemic inflammation play substantial roles in modulating cardiac excitability and remodeling. Inter organ crosstalk among the heart, adipose tissue, endocrine, and nervous systems further shapes arrhythmic risk, while emerging imaging and computational technologies are revealing new dimensions of sex related electrophysiologic diversity. Yet, persistent gaps remain in understanding the full spectrum of arrhythmogenesis, procedural management, and post ablation outcomes specific to women. This Research Topic aims to advance mechanistic, translational, and clinical insight into the electrophysiologic health of women across the lifespan. It seeks to bring together studies elucidating how hormonal, genetic, and environmental factors intersect to influence arrhythmia initiation, progression, and recurrence, and to identify strategies that improve diagnosis, risk stratification, and therapeutic precision. The Topic will highlight the integration of advanced imaging, artificial intelligence, and molecular profiling into personalized electrophysiology, fostering innovation and equitable representation in cardiovascular research and care. Ultimately, it strives to close the knowledge gap that limits sex specific prevention and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. To gather further insights into women’s cardiac electrophysiology across biological and clinical scales, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Sex specific mechanisms of atrial and ventricular arrhythmiaso Hormonal influences on electrophysiology, including menopause and reproductive agingo Arrhythmias during pregnancy and postpartum cardiovascular remodelingo Advanced imaging and electroanatomical mapping for substrate characterization and risk predictiono State of the art catheter ablation and device therapy approaches in womeno Artificial intelligence and machine learning applications to electrophysiology datao Precision medicine integrating molecular, genetic, proteomic, and metabolomic signatureso Inter organ crosstalk and metabolic regulation in arrhythmogenesiso Lifestyle, cardiometabolic health, and autonomic dysfunction as arrhythmic modulatorso Sex disparities in access to electrophysiologic care and representation in clinical researcho Predictors and mechanisms of arrhythmia recurrence after ablation Topic editors: Anuradha Kalyanasundaram, Céline Fiset Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/82779/advances-in-womens-cardiac-electrophysiology-arrhythmia-mechanisms-imaging-ablation-and-cardiovascular-health-across-lifespan
