Advancing Cancer Nanotechnology: Integrating Engineering Design, Nano-Bio Interactions, and Translational Bioengineering

Cancer nanotechnology stands at the forefront of nanobiotechnology, drawing together innovation from materials science, engineering, and the biomedical sciences to tackle one of today’s most challenging diseases. As the field evolves, the ability to precisely design nanomaterials—modulating parameters such as size, surface properties, and responsiveness—has opened new possibilities for cancer diagnosis, therapy, and monitoring. However, the complexity of nano-bio interfaces, encompassing phenomena such as protein corona formation, cellular uptake, and interactions with the tumor microenvironment, presents unique scientific and technological challenges. While research has demonstrated the promise of smart nanoscale systems, microenvironment-responsive carriers, and advanced imaging agents, translating these breakthroughs into safe, effective clinical solutions remains an ongoing endeavor. Persistent obstacles include reproducible manufacturing, thorough safety validation, regulatory hurdles, and scalable implementation, all of which are crucial for the successful adoption of nanotechnologies in clinical oncology. This Research Topic aims to consolidate and highlight engineering-driven advancements that push the boundaries of cancer nanotechnology within the context of nanobiotechnology. Of particular interest are strategies that systematically elucidate nano-bio interface phenomena; advances in the rational design and functionalization of nanomaterials for improved cancer targeting, diagnostics, and therapy; and interdisciplinary approaches that bridge lab-scale innovation with translational application. The focus spans both the engineering of fundamental nano-biological interactions and the practical challenges of moving from bench to bedside. Researchers are encouraged to share both experimental and computational approaches that provide new insights or methodologies, as well as investigations addressing safety, scale-up, and regulatory considerations essential for clinical success. To gather further insights in engineering-driven cancer nanotechnology within the biomedical nanobiotechnology field, this Research Topic welcomes articles focused on, but not limited to, the following themes:- Rational engineering design of polymeric, lipid-based, metallic, ceramic, and hybrid nanomaterials for cancer theranostics- Advanced characterization and functionalization strategies of nano-bio interfaces- Exploration of protein corona dynamics and its impacts on immune modulation and nanoparticle fate- Development of tumor-targeting and microenvironment-responsive nanosystems- Computational modeling, simulation, and AI-enabled prediction relevant to nanoscale phenomena and interactions- Innovations in nano-biosensors and nanoparticle-enabled imaging platforms- Preclinical validation, nanotoxicology, and safety evaluation of cancer nanodevices- Scale-up, manufacturing reproducibility, regulatory, and translational aspects specific to cancer nanotechnology- Interdisciplinary collaborations that drive integration between engineering, material sciences, and biomedicine Topic editors: Selvankumar Thangaswamy, Naveen Vankadari, Kamala-Kannan Seralathan Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/78223/advancing-cancer-nanotechnology-integrating-engineering-design-nano-bio-interactions-and-translational-bioengineering
