Advancing Digital Manufacturing within the Industry 5.0 Paradigm: Human–Centricity, Resilience, and Intelligent Value Networks
Manufacturing has always evolved with human ambition—from mechanisation to automation, from cyber-physical integration to intelligent value creation. Today, the transition toward Industry 5.0 marks a decisive moment where technology must not only amplify efficiency but elevate human well-being, sustainability, and societal resilience. This proposed Research Topic explores the transformative potential of digital manufacturing within this emerging paradigm.Industry 5.0 envisions production ecosystems where humans and intelligent systems collaborate synergistically. Unlike the automation-driven ethos of Industry 4.0, the new paradigm emphasises human-centricity, sustainable practices, and resilient operations. We invite contributions that examine how advanced digital technologies—AI-driven robotics, extended reality interfaces, digital twins, cyber-physical systems, wearable sensing, and intelligent automation—can support this shift.A core dimension of this theme is human–machine collaboration. Research is needed on cognitive-adaptive manufacturing, intuitive interaction modalities, cobot fluency, and ergonomics for Operator 5.0. This theme also encourages examination of how human creativity, tacit knowledge, and skilled decision-making can be augmented rather than displaced by intelligent tools.Another critical thread is sustainability and resilience. Global shocks have exposed vulnerabilities in optimized yet rigid supply chains. Digital manufacturing must therefore support distributed production, circular resource flows, predictive maintenance, and real-time orchestration of complex value networks. Studies on energy efficiency, environmental impact reduction, and circular manufacturing will be integral.Additionally, industry value networks are transforming into intelligent, data-driven ecosystems. Cloud–edge architectures, platform economies, autonomous logistics, and intelligent scheduling systems are reshaping how value is generated. Research on new business models, mass customization, and regionalized micro-manufactories aligns closely with this theme. Finally, contributions on skills, ethics, organizational readiness, and policy frameworks are essential. Responsible innovation—rooted in transparency, safety, and human dignity—must guide the deployment of intelligent manufacturing systems.Through this Research Topic, we aim to curate interdisciplinary insights that blend engineering, human factors, operations, and societal considerations. It will serve as a platform to redefine how manufacturing systems can advance human-machine harmony, sustainable productivity, and resilient industrial ecosystems in the era of Industry 5.0.
