Advancing Patient Selection and Decision-Making in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Multidisciplinary Teams
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which comprises Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, represents a significant and evolving clinical challenge within both gastroenterology and surgical domains. The advent of multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings has been instrumental in transforming IBD management, enabling structured collaboration among healthcare providers to deliver personalized care amidst growing clinical complexity. However, considerable uncertainty remains regarding the efficiency and tangible benefits of these meetings, particularly due to the lack of standardized criteria for selecting patients to present. Recent evidence highlights improvements in care coordination and potential patient outcomes, but systematic studies on patient selection, decision-making processes, and the integration of advanced technologies like artificial intelligence are scarce. Moreover, variations in MDT practices and outcomes are evident across different healthcare systems worldwide, highlighting a pressing need for a more comprehensive, evidence-based approach to MDT implementation in IBD care. This Research Topic aims to build a clearer understanding of patient selection strategies and discussion processes within IBD MDT meetings. By systematically characterizing which patient cases are prioritized for multidisciplinary review, assessing the direct impact of MDT deliberations on clinical management, and examining how meeting dynamics and decision-making frameworks contribute to patient outcomes, this research will identify key factors that can enhance efficacy and transparency. The objectives further include exploring the adoption and impact of digital technologies on workflow, documentation, and collaborative decision-making, as well as addressing barriers to standardization. Our ultimate goal is to establish actionable recommendations that optimize MDT meeting procedures and promote best practices across diverse clinical settings globally. To gather further insights in optimizing MDT meeting strategies and patient selection in the multidimensional context of IBD management, this Research Topic welcomes submissions focused on real-world clinical experiences, comparative analyses, and cross-disciplinary innovation. We encourage articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Descriptive and comparative evaluation of patient selection criteria for MDT meetings in IBD care;o Outcomes linked to MDT-based case presentation versus standard management strategies;o Best practices for structuring and facilitating effective IBD MDT meetings;o Timing and criteria for surgical referral and perioperative planning within MDT meetings;o Integration of patient voices and shared decision-making in MDT discussions;o Barriers and facilitators to implementing standardized MDT protocols;o Role of digital tools (including AI) and data management in supporting MDT meetings;o Health-economic analyses of MDT meeting impact on IBD resource utilization. We welcome submissions in the form of, but not limited to, original research articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, perspectives, and clinical guidelines that address the above aspects.
