Advancing Sustainable Energy Policy through Systems Modelling, Optimisation, and Low-Carbon Technologies

The global transition towards a sustainable and low-carbon energy future requires effective energy policies that balance environmental sustainability, economic competitiveness, and energy security. The increasing deployment of renewable energy, hydrogen technologies, battery energy storage systems, and digital solutions presents new opportunities to transform energy systems. However, challenges related to policy coordination, renewable energy intermittency, infrastructure investment, technology adoption, and regulatory frameworks remain significant. Evidence-based policymaking supported by energy systems modelling, optimisation, and techno-economic assessment is essential to identify effective strategies and evaluate the long-term impacts of energy transition pathways. This research area provides opportunities to bridge the gap between technological innovation and policy implementation, supporting informed decision-making by governments, industries, and other stakeholders. Advancing sustainable energy policy is therefore crucial to accelerating decarbonisation, strengthening energy resilience, and achieving long-term sustainable development goals. The goal of this research area is to advance the development and implementation of effective, evidence-based sustainable energy policies that support the transition towards a low-carbon, resilient, and secure energy future. It aims to promote interdisciplinary research integrating energy systems modelling, optimisation, economic assessment, and policy analysis to evaluate alternative energy pathways and identify practical solutions to emerging energy challenges. Particular emphasis is placed on renewable energy integration, hydrogen technologies, battery energy storage systems, energy efficiency, digitalisation, and carbon emissions reduction.Furthermore, this research area seeks to strengthen collaboration among academia, policymakers, industry, and other stakeholders to translate scientific findings and technological innovations into actionable policies. It encourages the assessment of regulatory frameworks, investment strategies, market mechanisms, and policy instruments that can accelerate clean energy adoption while maintaining economic competitiveness and energy affordability. Ultimately, the goal is to provide robust scientific evidence and practical insights that support informed decision-making, enhance energy security, and facilitate the achievement of national and international climate targets and sustainable development objectives. This research area welcomes contributions on sustainable energy policy, energy transition strategies, and policy frameworks supporting low-carbon development. The scope includes renewable energy deployment, energy systems modelling and optimisation, hydrogen economy development, battery energy storage systems, energy efficiency, carbon management, and energy security. Research addressing techno-economic assessment, life cycle assessment, carbon pricing, renewable energy incentives, regulatory mechanisms, and investment strategies is also encouraged. In addition, studies exploring digitalisation, artificial intelligence, digital twins, and data-driven approaches for energy planning and policy evaluation are welcome. Contributions may include theoretical frameworks, quantitative modelling, case studies, comparative policy analysis, and practical assessments of policy implementation. Particular attention will be given to research that connects technological innovation with effective governance, industrial applications, and measurable sustainability outcomes, providing valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and industry practitioners.
