Advancing Understanding of Developmental Coordination Disorder: Diagnosis, Mechanisms, and Interventions - Volume II

This Research Topic is part of the 'Advancing Understanding of Developmental Coordination Disorder: Diagnosis, Mechanisms, and Interventions series'.Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent motor coordination difficulties that significantly impact daily functioning, academic performance, and psychosocial well-being. Despite increasing recognition of DCD and its prevalence among school-aged children, important challenges remain in early identification, mechanistic understanding, and the development of effective interventions.Building on the foundations established in Volume I, this second volume reflects continued progress in interdisciplinary research on DCD. Advances in neuroimaging, movement analysis, digital assessment tools, and computational approaches are providing new insights into the neural, cognitive, and sensorimotor mechanisms underlying motor coordination difficulties. At the same time, growing attention is being paid to heterogeneity within DCD, co-occurring conditions (such as ADHD and autism spectrum disorder), and developmental trajectories across the lifespan.Volume II seeks to further integrate research on diagnosis, underlying mechanisms, and translational interventions. This volume also encourages discussion of assessment frameworks, methodological rigor, and cross-cultural considerations to strengthen the clinical and societal impact of DCD research. By continuing the dialogue initiated in Volume I, this Research Topic aims to consolidate recent advances while highlighting innovative, multidisciplinary approaches that bridge neuroscience, clinical practice, and education to improve outcomes for individuals with DCD.The scope of this Research Topic includes, but is not limited to:- Advances in diagnostic criteria, assessment tools, and early identification of DCD- Neural, cognitive, and sensorimotor mechanisms underlying coordination difficulties- Comorbidity and shared mechanisms with other neurodevelopmental conditions- Longitudinal and lifespan perspectives on DCD- Intervention strategies, including motor training, cognitive-motor approaches, and digital therapies with results presented on participation level.- Awareness of DCD amongst (PE)teachers and other professionals integrated in School-based, community-based, and family-centered intervention models.- Cross-cultural perspectives and global health approaches to DCD- Methodological innovations and theoretical frameworks advancing DCD research- Reviews synthesizing current knowledge and identifying future directions Topic editors: Jorge Lopes Cavalcante Neto, Dorothee Jelsma, Tatiane Targino Gomes Draghi Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/78871/advancing-understanding-of-developmental-coordination-disorder-diagnosis-mechanisms-and-interventions---volume-ii
