Advancing Wearable Electronics: Materials, Sensors, and Artificial Intelligence Integration

The field of intelligent wearable electronics is rapidly merging materials science, sensor technology, and artificial intelligence to revolutionize human–machine interaction and continuous health monitoring. Recent breakthroughs in flexible and stretchable materials, alongside miniaturized, high-sensitivity sensors, have addressed several foundational hurdles in developing truly wearable systems. However, the progress has unveiled competing challenges, such as integrating large-scale sensor arrays with power efficiency and system durability, as well as deciphering increasingly complex, multi-modal biological signals for real-world applications. Significant studies have showcased bio-inspired sensor architectures and advanced fabrication methods, but harnessing and interpreting the resulting data streams remains a pervasive obstacle, requiring robust computational approaches. This Research Topic aims to showcase the full spectrum of innovation in intelligent wearable electronics, from foundational advances in soft, high-performing materials and bio-inspired engineering to the deployment of adaptive AI algorithms and real-time decision-making systems. The main objective is to highlight works that bridge the persistent gap between cutting-edge sensor hardware and state-of-the-art software, spotlighting techniques such as machine learning, deep neural networks, and advanced signal processing for accurate context recognition and actionable feedback. By encouraging multidisciplinary approaches, this Research Topic seeks to envision the next wave of intelligent wearables that seamlessly integrate with daily life, healthcare settings, robotics, and beyond. The scope includes foundational and applied research across smart materials, device fabrication, computational signal processing, and application-driven system integration. Studies limited to fundamental hardware or software perspectives without clear relevance to wearable or AI-enabled systems are outside the boundaries of this Research Topic. To gather further insights in intelligent wearable electronics, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Advanced materials and scalable fabrication techniques for flexible and stretchable electronics• Bio-inspired sensor design and transduction mechanisms for enhanced selectivity and sensitivity• Machine learning and deep learning models for multi-modal sensor data decoding and pattern recognition• Signal decoupling and real-time processing algorithms for complex physiological signals• System-level integration and practical deployment in continuous health monitoring, human–robot interfaces, and operation in extreme environmental conditionsWe welcome original research, reviews, perspectives, and technology reports that align with the above themes.
