Aging Well With Diabetes: Public Health Strategies for Longevity, Equity, and Integrated Care

Diabetes is among the most prevalent and consequential chronic conditions affecting older adults worldwide, contributing to multimorbidity, frailty, functional decline, disability, cognitive impairment, reduced quality of life, and increased healthcare utilization. As populations age rapidly, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, the public health challenge has expanded beyond glycemic control to include how individuals can age well with diabetes within complex social, cultural, and health-system environments. This Research Topic addresses an urgent need for evidence that links clinical management to functional outcomes, equity, and health-system preparedness across diverse global contexts. This Research Topic aims to curate high-quality, public health oriented research that advances understanding of aging well with diabetes, with emphasis on:- Healthy aging and functional outcomes, including frailty, cognition, disability, independence, and quality of life.- Integrated and multimodal care models, including primary care and public health integration, team-based care, and community-based interventions.- Health systems, policy, and implementation science, focusing on system readiness, workforce capacity, scalability, and sustainability.- Equity and social determinants of health, including structural barriers, access to care, and global perspectives with a focus on LMIC settings.- Population level prevention and real world evidence, including longitudinal studies, registry and cohort based research, and pragmatic approaches to evaluation. We welcome original research, systematic and narrative reviews, methods papers, and policy or implementation focused contributions. By bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives across public health, gerontology, primary care, and health systems research, this Topic seeks to inform actionable strategies that support longevity, preserve function, reduce inequities, and strengthen integrated care for older adults living with diabetes.
