AI and Digital Transformation in Pharmaceutical Innovation

Artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation are strongly influencing pharmaceutical innovation by altering how new therapies are identified, developed, manufactured, evaluated, and brought to patients. Recent advances in generative AI, machine learning, computational biology, automation, and data platforms are expanding their role. These fast developments raise important questions not only about technological performance, but also about how pharmaceutical organizations redesign innovation.Across the pharmaceutical innovation lifecycle, AI offers opportunities to address challenges associated with development costs, timelines, scientific uncertainty. In early-stage research, AI-enabled approaches can facilitate target identification, molecular design, drug repurposing, and prediction of pharmacological and toxicological properties. In clinical development, digital technologies can support patient identification and stratification, trial design, recruitment, monitoring, and the analysis of complex clinical and real-world datasets. In addition, AI is increasingly relevant to manufacturing, regulatory activities, pharmacovigilance, supply-chain management, and interactions with healthcare professionals and patients. All these applications suggest that AI may indeed affect the structure of pharmaceutical innovation itself. For this Research Topic, “AI and Digital Transformation in Pharmaceutical Innovation,” we search for contributions that advance theoretical, empirical, and practice-oriented understanding of these transformations. Relevant topics include but are not limited to the following: • AI-enabled drug discovery and development• Generative AI models• Digital clinical trials• Data• Digital biomarkers and precision medicine• Organizational capabilities for AI adoption• Human-AI collaboration• The ethical and legal implications of AI. This Research Topic aims to develop a richer understanding of how AI-driven digital transformation is changing pharmaceutical innovation—and what these changes mean for researchers, firms, healthcare systems, regulators, and society.
