AI and Learning: Exploring Artificial Intelligence in Education, Psychology, and Online Environments

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the educational landscape as well as many other disciplines, redefining how individuals learn, interact, and engage within digital environments. AI-powered tools - ranging from personalised learning systems to emotion-aware technologies - offer significant opportunities for supporting both cognitive development and emotional well-being. Innovations in adaptive learning, emotional monitoring, learner motivation, and psychological support demonstrate promising benefits for students’ academic performance and overall well-being. At the same time, the rapid integration of AI raises important concerns regarding autonomy, privacy, emotional safety, and the preservation of authentic human connection. The aim of this Research Topic is to examine the current and potential impacts of AI in education. It seeks to critically examine the intersection of AI, education, and psychology, with particular attention to how AI can foster intellectual growth, motivation, resilience, and self-awareness. It also seeks to explore how teachers, counsellors, and mental-health professionals can employ AI responsibly to create empathetic and supportive learning environments. Contributions are invited that address the ethical, cognitive, affective, and relational dimensions of AI in education, including the current impacts, potential risks, emerging best practices, and implications for future policy and practice.Interdisciplinary and future-oriented perspectives include:• AI literacy and teacher readiness for AI-enhanced education• digital identity, digital legacy, and the shaping of learners’ online presence• accessibility, inclusion, and equity for diverse learners• fairness and transparency in learning analytics• cross-cultural and cross-generational differences in AI acceptance and use. These additions broaden the relevance of the topic and reflect the growing need for human-centred and ethically grounded AI integration in global educational systems. The Research Topic welcomes empirical studies, theoretical analyses, case studies, and methodological contributions. Themes may include, but are not limited to:• personalised and adaptive AI tutoring systems• emotion-aware learning technologies and mental-health monitoring• cognitive, motivational, and behavioural outcomes of AI-supported education• psychological theories informing AI design and implementation• ethical challenges, emotional privacy, and data governance in digital learning• the role of teachers, counsellors, and human connection in AI-driven classrooms• real-world experiences and impact of integrating AI into learning and psychological support• learning analytics, early-warning systems, and predictive modelling• digital identity development and responsible engagement in online learning environments.
