AI-based Diagnostics and Treatment in Ophthalmology and Stem Cell Therapy for Ocular Diseases

Ophthalmology is entering a new era of innovation driven by the convergence of pathology, computational science, regenerative medicine, and biomaterials engineering. Lens disorders—particularly ectopia lentis—remain clinically challenging due to their complex mechanisms and substantial impact on vision. Advances in lens zonular pathology are essential for improving diagnostic precision and therapeutic outcomes. In parallel, artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming ophthalmic diagnostics, enabling automated imaging interpretation, disease screening, and personalized patient management. Stem cell therapy has emerged as a promising strategy for ocular regeneration, with the potential to reconstruct damaged tissues and restore vision. Additionally, biomaterials—especially biomechanical scaffolds and bioengineered substrates—show strong promise for lens and zonular fiber reconstruction, serving as critical platforms for tissue engineering and translational therapies. Together, these converging fields are setting the stage for the next generation of clinical breakthroughs in ophthalmology. The goal of this Research Topic is to advance the understanding and treatment of lens disorders, particularly ectopia lentis, by integrating pathology, computational intelligence, regenerative medicine, and biomaterials science. We aim to highlight the role of AI in improving diagnostic precision, the promise of stem cell–based therapies for ocular regeneration, and the potential of biomechanical scaffolds and biomimetic materials to restore lens zonular structures. By bringing together clinicians, biomedical engineers, and translational scientists, this collection seeks to promote interdisciplinary collaboration, accelerate the translation of laboratory innovations into clinical solutions, and establish new paradigms to address unmet needs in ophthalmology. This Research Topic welcomes multidisciplinary contributions and global perspectives, bridging fundamental science, engineering innovation, and clinical practice to advance vision science.
