AI-enabled image restoration and reconstruction methods for neuroscience imaging
In the field of neuroscience, imaging techniques are central for unraveling the structure and function of the nervous system at molecular, cellular, circuit, and systems levels. Recent advances have given rise to vast and rich imaging datasets, but challenges such as noise, low resolution, signal distortion, and incomplete or artifact-laden data remain persistent obstacles to extracting precise information. Traditional image processing tools often fall short in overcoming these barriers, limiting the level of insight that can be gained from state-of-the-art imaging modalities. The ongoing emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning-based methodologies has sparked new debates and opportunities concerning accuracy, scalability, reproducibility, and translational application within neuroscience imaging. While pioneering studies have demonstrated remarkable improvements in denoising, deblurring, super-resolution and data reconstruction, these techniques still face hurdles in generalizability, interpretability, and adaptation to emerging multimodal datasets. This Research Topic aims to provide a focused platform for the development, validation, and critical assessment of innovative AI-driven methods for the restoration and reconstruction of neuroscience images. Key objectives include, but not limited to, the identification of new computational algorithms, the integration of machine learning with advanced neuroimaging modalities, and the examination of how these advances improve the visualization and analysis of neural structures and functions. Contributions are encouraged to address theoretical advancements, novel algorithmic strategies, experimental validation on neuroscience datasets, and interdisciplinary approaches that unite neurobiology with computational sciences.
