AI Glasses in Education: Psychological Perspectives on Learning and Teaching
With the rapid development of generative artificial intelligence, multimodal sensing, augmented reality, and wearable technologies, AI glasses are emerging as a promising research topic in educational technology. Compared with tablets, laptops, or VR headsets, AI glasses offer distinctive affordances such as first-person perspective, real-time voice interaction, image recognition, contextual awareness, hands-free operation, and learning process recording. These features may support more natural, immediate, and context-sensitive learning activities by reducing cognitive load, enhancing situational awareness, and sustaining learner motivation. In educational settings, AI glasses can serve not only as intelligent learning companions for students but also as tools that assist teachers in providing contextual guidance, real-time feedback, and learning analytics. However, research on the educational use of AI glasses remains at an early stage. More systematic investigation is needed from theoretical, instructional design, empirical, and ethical perspectives. This Research Topic aims to explore the educational potential, instructional design models, learning outcomes, and challenges associated with the use of AI glasses in educational contexts. Although recent advances have enabled AI glasses to integrate functions such as voice assistants, image recognition, real-time question answering, multimodal recording, and AR-based prompts, their psychological roles in teaching and learning have not yet been fully defined. In particular, more empirical evidence is needed to understand how AI glasses may support learners’ problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, metacognition, and self-regulated learning in K–12 education, higher education, STEAM education, inquiry-based learning, vocational training, special education, and situated learning. This Research Topic seeks to bring together studies from different disciplines and educational contexts to clarify how AI glasses can evolve from wearable devices into educational technologies capable of providing instructional scaffolding, intelligent feedback, learning process analysis, and immersive-contextual support. It also addresses emerging issues related to data privacy, learning ethics, teacher roles, classroom management, and equitable access, with the goal of establishing theoretical and practical foundations for future AI-supported wearable learning environments. This Research Topic welcomes studies on the applications of AI glasses, AI+AR glasses, smart glasses, and related wearable AI technologies in educational settings. Manuscripts may include empirical studies, design-based research, mixed-methods studies, systematic literature reviews, theoretical papers, case studies, learning analytics studies, and perspective articles. Authors are especially encouraged to present innovative and evidence-based research from the perspectives of psychological mechanisms underlying instructional design, learning processes, interaction patterns, teacher practices, ethical governance, and technology integration.Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:Integration of AI glasses into STEAM education, science education, engineering education, and inquiry-based learningDesign and evaluation of AI glasses as intelligent learning companions or AI teaching assistantsInstructional models using AI+AR glasses to support immersive, situated, and embodied learningThe role of AI glasses in fostering collaborative learning, problem-solving, and creativityAI glasses for supporting self-directed learning, intra-group collaborative learning, inter-group learning, and teacher-guided learningMultimodal learning analytics, real-time feedback, and learning process recording through AI glassesTeacher use of AI glasses for instructional guidance, assessment, and classroom managementApplications of AI glasses in special education, language learning, vocational training, and outdoor learningPrivacy, safety, ethics, and equitable access issues in the educational implementation of AI glassesIntegration of AI glasses with generative AI, large language models, computer vision, and voice interactionLearner attention, perception, and cognitive engagement mediated by AI glasses in classroom and naturalistic settingsTheoretical models, design principles, and future research directions for the educational use of AI glasses Topic editors: Zehui Zhan, Sheng-Yi Wu, Pao-Nan Chou Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/82121/ai-glasses-in-education-psychological-perspectives-on-learning-and-teaching
