AI in Intelligent Agricultural Machinery for Field Crop Planting and Protection

During the planting process of field crops, varying soil conditions, agronomic requirements, and crop growth status greatly affect the perception, decision-making, and precise control of intelligent agricultural machinery, especially in plant protection operations such as pesticide application, weeding, and pest and disease control. Artificial intelligence technology can analyze the influence laws of changes in the environment, reveal the mechanisms affecting the quality and efficiency of plant protection operations. It helps to construct a robust model for information perception, decision-making, and control of agricultural machinery operations, thereby achieving the goal of efficient, green, and low-cost production of field crops. However, at present, the perception, decision-making, and control of agricultural machinery operations based on artificial intelligence still face many challenges when applied to complex and highly variable plant protection scenarios in the field. This Research Topic aims to explore innovative research achievements of artificial intelligence technology in the field, with a particular emphasis on crop and plant protection–related operations. By addressing these challenges, the Research Topic seeks to contribute to solving difficult technical problems in sustainable and intelligent phytoprotection, and to promote the development of scientific and technological frontiers in this field. In this Research Topic, we welcome all article types published by Frontiers in Plant Science that dissect the use of AI as a modern and sustainable plant protection machinery especially those that focus on:• Intelligent agricultural machinery operation environment perception technology for plant protection operations• Sensors for key operation parameters of agricultural machinery, including spray quality, droplet deposition, canopy penetration, and weed/disease detection• Intelligent decision-making methods for agricultural machinery operations, such as variable-rate pesticide application and site-specific weed control• Precision operation control technology and systems for agricultural machinery aimed at improving the quality and efficiency of crop protection• Construction and typical applications of field smart farms, with integrated intelligent plant protection functions Topic editors: Yanxin Yin, Jiangbo Li, Runan Zhang Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/76402/ai-in-intelligent-agricultural-machinery-for-field-crop-planting-and-protection
