AI-Supported Personalized Learning and Student Behavioral Engagement in Higher Education
Artificial intelligence (AI) is creating new opportunities to personalize learning and strengthen student behavioral engagement in higher education. Within university learning environments, AI-supported approaches can tailor feedback, guidance, learning activities, and academic support to students’ knowledge, progress, and individual learning needs. Such interventions may influence important learning behaviors among higher-education students, including motivation, self-regulation, persistence, help-seeking, participation, and responsiveness to feedback. However, evidence remains limited regarding how AI-supported personalization influences these behaviors and contributes to academic outcomes in university settings. There is therefore a growing need for empirical research examining targeted AI-supported pedagogical interventions specifically within higher education. Such evidence is essential for developing effective, ethical, inclusive, and learner-centred approaches that enhance personalized learning and behavioral engagement among university students. This Research Topic aims to strengthen the evidence base on how AI-supported personalized learning can enhance student behavioral engagement and academic outcomes specifically within higher education. As universities increasingly integrate AI into teaching and learning, there remains limited understanding of how personalized AI-supported interventions influence university students’ motivation, self-regulation, persistence, help-seeking, participation, and responsiveness to feedback. The collection therefore seeks research examining the design, implementation, and evaluation of targeted AI-supported pedagogical interventions in university courses and learning environments. Particular attention is given to approaches that personalize feedback, guidance, learning activities, and academic support while promoting transparency, fairness, privacy, academic integrity, and learner autonomy. The Research Topic aims to identify effective, responsible, and evidence-based strategies for using AI to support personalized learning, behavioral engagement, and measurable learning outcomes among students in higher education. This Research Topic focuses specifically on AI-supported personalized learning and student behavioral engagement in university and higher-education settings.
