AI/ML and computational approaches in inflammatory and infectious disease biology

This Research Topic seeks to synthesise state-of-the-art research utilising Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and computational systems biology to deconstruct the etiology of inflammatory and infectious diseases. Immune regulation involves stochastic, high-dimensional interactions across molecular and cellular scales that often exceed the resolution of traditional reductionist methodologies. The integration of multi-omics datasets—spanning genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics—with advanced algorithmic frameworks provides a pivotal avenue for deciphering these complex networks. This collection aims to bridge the gap between data generation and biological insight, driving the discovery of novel pathomechanisms, precision biomarkers, and rational therapeutic strategies. We welcome submissions of Original Research, Reviews, and Methods articles that focus on, but are not limited to, the following sub-topics:• Application of ML/deep learning models for the diagnosis, prognosis, or stratification of inflammatory or infectious diseases.• Computational modeling of host-pathogen interactions and immune response dynamics.• AI-driven therapeutic development, including in silico vaccine design, rational drug discovery and repurposing, and computational engineering of monoclonal antibodies and immunotherapies.• Systems biology approaches to integrate multi-omics data for identifying novel inflammatory pathways or biomarkers.• Predictive modeling of immune-mediated adverse events or treatment responses.• Computational analysis of microbiome-immune system interactions in the context of inflammation and disease (e.g., gut-related disorders).• Development of novel computational algorithms or platforms specifically designed for immunological data.
