Ancient Diseases and Medical Care: Paleopathological Insights - Volume III

Paleopathology, the study of ancient diseases and medical practices, offers profound insights into the evolutionary journey of human health. Diseases have been intertwined with humankind since the dawn of history, steering the course of human evolution, societal structures, and biological adaptability. By examining the antiquity of diseases through archaeological evidence, paleopathologists aim to shed light on how these ailments shaped past human populations. Despite significant advancements, many questions about disease prevalence, spread, and ancient medical responses remain unanswered. With the surge of archaeological discoveries, an extensive array of ancient human remains, such as fossils, embalmed mummies, and skeletal fragments, alongside textual artefacts like ancient manuscripts and stone tablets, have emerged. These treasures act as time capsules, providing a window into disease progression and ancient medical practices. Innovations in paleopathological techniques, such as paleoradiology, histology, and genetic analysis, have enhanced our ability to diagnose ancient diseases with precision. Recent developments in non-invasive imaging have revolutionised the study of mummified remains, enabling detailed examination without physical interference. This Research Topic aims to deepen our understanding of ancient diseases through modern scientific lenses while exploring the connections between past and present medical practices. It seeks to answer critical questions regarding the diagnosis of ancient illnesses and the treatments applied, through an exhaustive investigation of both physical and textual evidence. To gather further insights into the expansive realm of paleopathology and ancient healthcare, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Retrospective diagnosis of diseases in ancient human remains• Advances in archaeobotanical and paleoproteomic research• Analysis of ancient medical texts and iconography• Non-invasive methodologies in the study of mummies and skeletal remains• Reconstruction of ancient lifestyles and their impact on disease prevalenceThis Research Topic is open to a range of contributions, including case reports, original research, perspectives, mini-reviews, and commentaries.
