Anomalous Hall Effect in Collinear Antiferromagnets: Mechanisms, Tunability, and Device Prospects

The anomalous Hall effect (AHE), a transverse voltage arising without an external magnetic field, has long been associated with ferromagnetic order, where broken time-reversal symmetry produces a net Berry curvature in momentum space. The recent discovery that collinear antiferromagnets and altermagnets can host a substantial AHE has fundamentally challenged this paradigm. In these systems, macroscopic time-reversal symmetry is broken not by net magnetization but by the interplay between spin and crystal symmetries, or by the presence of higher-multipolar orders, giving rise to momentum-space Berry curvature distributions that generate measurable Hall responses. This finding opens a new chapter in Hall physics, connecting topological band theory, magnetic symmetry groups, and spintronic functionality in materials that are otherwise invisible to conventional magnetic probes. As such, this Research Topic aims to bring together theoretical and experimental contributions that address the microscopic origins, tunability, and symmetry conditions governing the AHE in collinear antiferromagnets, altermagnets, and related ordered phases.Additionally, this Research Topic emphasizes identifying material-specific design principles to guide the realization of AHE-based device architectures with practical functionality. Despite recent rapid progress in tuning the AHE in altermagnets, several foundational questions remain unresolved. How departures from the ideal magnetic symmetry, changes to Fermi surface topology, and disorder affect the AHE in altermagnets remain poorly understood. Moreover, the mechanisms by which the AHE can be controlled and tuned in collinear antiferromagnets, namely strain, carrier density, chemical substitution, interfacial proximity, or ultrafast optical excitation, are only beginning to be explored. This Research Topic welcomes contributions addressing the following themes: • symmetry analysis and group-theoretical frameworks for predicting AHE in altermagnets and non-collinear antiferromagnets• first-principle and numerical predictions of altermagnetic behavior• experimental measurements of the AHE in altermagnets and other magnetically ordered systems• ultrafast and field-driven control of the AHE• competing or coexisting order parameters that modify the Hall response• proposed or demonstrated device concepts exploiting AHE in antiferromagnetic systems Topic editors: Alberto De La Torre, Mirian Garcia Fernandez, Daniel Jost Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/79925/anomalous-hall-effect-in-collinear-antiferromagnets-mechanisms-tunability-and-device-prospects
