Antimicrobial Resistance, Microbiome Dynamics, and Host–Pathogen Interactions Through a One Health Lens
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is accelerating at the human–animal–environment interface, driven by selective pressures in clinical, agricultural, and ecological systems. Simultaneously, microbiome research has revealed the profound influence of microbial communities on pathogen colonization, immune responses, and horizontal gene transfer. The interplay between microbial ecology and host–pathogen biology presents both challenges and opportunities for understanding AMR emergence and transmission. A One Health framework provides a comprehensive approach for dissecting the ecological and evolutionary forces that shape microbial communities and resistance determinants. Despite rapid advances, major gaps remain in linking microbiome function, pathogen behavior, and AMR dissemination across interconnected ecosystems. This Research Topic aims to unify interdisciplinary efforts to better understand how microbiome composition, host–pathogen interactions, and environmental factors drive the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance. By bringing together microbiologists, immunologists, veterinarians, epidemiologists, and computational biologists, the collection will explore mechanisms of AMR transmission, microbiome-mediated pathogen modulation, and cross-species dissemination within a One Health context. The goal is to promote integrative research that identifies predictive biomarkers, intervention strategies, and ecological drivers crucial for reducing AMR risks. We welcome studies that provide mechanistic insights, translational implications, and innovative methodologies capable of advancing surveillance, prevention, and therapeutic approaches. We invite manuscripts spanning basic, translational, and applied research addressing:• Microbiome influences on pathogen colonization, virulence, and AMR gene exchange• Host immune modulation by microbial communities• Environmental reservoirs and ecological networks contributing to AMR spread• Zoonotic transmission pathways of resistant pathogens• One Health surveillance tools and molecular diagnostics• Intervention strategies targeting microbiome restoration, pathogen disruption, or AMR mitigation• Novel computational, genomic, or systems biology approaches to characterize host–microbe–environment interactionsWe welcome Original Research, Reviews, Mini Reviews, Perspectives, Brief Research Reports, and Methods papers.
