Antioxidant Pathways: A New Frontier in Synaptic Regeneration
The intricate network of synapses forms the foundation of neuronal communication and function in the brain. Damage to these synaptic connections, whether due to neurodegenerative diseases, traumatic injuries, or aging, can lead to significant cognitive and motor deficits. Recent advances in neuroscience have highlighted the crucial role of oxidative stress in contributing to synaptic dysfunction and decay. This Research Topic aims to explore how antioxidant pathways can be harnessed as a therapeutic frontier to promote synaptic regeneration and repair.Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the body's ability to detoxify these reactive intermediates or repair the resulting damage. Excessive ROS levels can lead to lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, and DNA damage, all of which contribute to synaptic loss and neuronal death. Yet, emerging research suggests that enhancing antioxidant defenses could mitigate these effects and promote synaptic recovery. This Research Topic invites contributions that delve into the molecular mechanisms through which antioxidant pathways influence synaptic health and regeneration. We seek original research articles, reviews, and opinions that address questions such as:- What specific antioxidant pathways are pivotal in protecting synapses from oxidative damage?- How do these pathways interact with other cellular mechanisms involved in synaptic remodeling and neuroprotection?- Can novel antioxidant compounds or genetic manipulations designed to boost endogenous antioxidant systems enhance synaptic resilience and repair?- What are the implications of targeting antioxidant pathways for treating neurological conditions characterized by synaptic loss, such as Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease?By fostering a deeper understanding of how antioxidant pathways modulate synaptic function and resilience, this Research Topic anticipates revealing novel strategies to combat neurodegenerative diseases and enhance brain health.
