Apolipoproteins in Cardiovascular Disease: Pathophysiology, Risk Prediction and Emerging Therapeutic Targets
Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide despite major advances in prevention and lipid-lowering therapies. Increasing evidence suggests that apolipoproteins play a central role not only in lipid transport and metabolism, but also in inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, thrombosis, and atherosclerotic plaque progression. Beyond traditional lipid parameters, apolipoprotein-related biomarkers are emerging as important tools for cardiovascular risk stratification and personalized medicine. This Research Topic aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the expanding role of apolipoproteins in cardiovascular disease, spanning basic pathophysiological mechanisms, clinical applications, and therapeutic implications. Particular emphasis will be placed on the complex interactions between apolipoproteins and vascular biology, as well as their potential integration into modern cardiovascular prevention strategies. We welcome original research articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, narrative reviews, translational studies, and clinical perspectives addressing topics including, but not limited to:• Pathophysiological mechanisms linking apolipoproteins to atherosclerosis and vascular inflammation• The role of apolipoproteins in ischemic stroke, coronary artery disease, heart failure, and metabolic disorders• Apolipoproteins as biomarkers for cardiovascular risk prediction and prognosis• Integration of apolipoprotein parameters into cardiovascular risk prediction models and scoring systems• Comparative value of apolipoproteins versus conventional lipid measurements• Genetic determinants and Mendelian randomization studies involving apolipoproteins• Lipoprotein abnormalities and residual cardiovascular risk• Therapeutic strategies targeting apolipoprotein-related pathways• Novel lipid-lowering therapies and emerging pharmacological interventions• Precision medicine approaches involving apolipoprotein profiling• Future directions and translational applications in cardiovascular preventionThis collection aims to bridge basic science and clinical practice while highlighting the evolving role of apolipoproteins as both biomarkers and therapeutic targets in cardiovascular medicine.
