Applications of Surface Plasmon Resonance in the Pharmaceutical and Biochemical Fields

Over the past two decades, Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) has evolved into the gold standard to measure biomolecular interactions since it presents several advantages compared to other binding assays, among which the possibility to perform a label-free and real-time analysis, allowing the definition not only of the affinity constants, but also the kinetic parameters of an interaction. In the modern pharmaceutical and biochemical landscape, SPR is a key technique in investigating the complexities of modern drug modalities, from small-molecule fragments to large-scale biologics and challenging targets. This Research Topic aims to address high-quality research and reviews that highlight the innovative applications of SPR in the biochemical and pharmaceutical areas. The topics, therefore, include several applications of the technique, ranging from more traditional drug-protein or protein-protein binding to more tricky research on the mechanisms underlying biological interactions. We welcome contributions focused on, but not limited to, the following topics:• Biomolecular interactions: study of the binding involving molecules such as proteins, drugs, nucleic acids, lipids, carbohydrates.• Applications on whole cells and viruses/bacteria: challenges in the investigation of such entities in a microfluidic system, and information that can be obtained.• Biologics: insights into the development of biosimilars, epitope mapping, and the assessment of immunogenicity.• Enzymology and catalysis: use of SPR to monitor the progress of biochemical reactions or to identify enzyme inhibitors.• High-throughput screening: automated systems and fast analyses• Fragment-Based Drug Discovery (FBDD): use of SPR and new-generation techniques to detect weak-affinity interactions in the early stages of drug discovery.• Complex matrices: recent advances in performing SPR analysis directly in serum, plasma, or cell lysates.
