Approaches to the Diagnosis and Surgical Management of Odontogenic and Maxillofacial Bone Lesions

Odontogenic and maxillofacial bone lesions are destructive conditions that result in significant facial deformity which has direct influence on the patients’ aesthetics and function. These lesions range from benign cysts to aggressive tumours and are broadly classified as odontogenic or non-odontogenic in origin. Odontogenic lesions are further divided into cysts and tumours while non-odontogenic lesions include reactive lesions, fibro-osseous lesions, giant cell lesions and bone tumours. All of these lesions pose significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to a wide range of clinical, radiological and histopathological manifestations with some degree of overlap.Several surgical methods have been described in the literature regarding the management of these lesions. The main goal of therapy is to eradicate the lesion completely without future recurrences and to minimize morbidity to the patient. Nevertheless, there is considerable disagreement in the literature regarding the best methods to manage these lesions in the jaws. This is especially more relevant with the advent of new gene-targeted drugs and minimally invasive surgical techniques as well as low morbidity reconstructive efforts utilizing tissue engineering. This Research Topic focuses on exploring advances in diagnostic approaches to these lesions including the use of molecular studies and advanced imaging modalities such as Magnetic resonance imaging, Computed tomography and Cone beam computed tomography. This Research Topic will also explore the latest therapeutic methods including the use of gene-targeted therapies and minimally invasive surgical techniques. Reconstruction of post-surgical defects using traditional and tissue engineering methods will also be examined. This Research Topic seeks submissions that address a range of topics on evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, including:• Advanced diagnostic imaging of odontogenic cysts and tumours as well as non-odontogenic lesions include fibro-osseous lesions and bone pathology• Role of genetics and molecular studies on the diagnosis and management of these lesions• Evidence-based surgical methods to treat aggressive odontogenic and non-odontogenic tumours of the maxillofacial region• Reconstruction of defects using traditional tissue transfer and tissue engineering techniques • Reviews of current literature on diagnosis and management of odontogenic and maxillofacial bone lesions• Quality of life studies to evaluate treatment outcomesThrough these contributions, we aim to advance the diagnostic work-up and surgical treatment of odontogenic cysts and tumours as well as other bone-related pathology of the maxillofacial region.
