Aptamer-Based Recognition in Microbiology: From Molecular Interactions to Diagnostic and Therapeutic Applications

The precise molecular recognition of pathogens and their components is a critical factor for advancing both infectious disease diagnostics and the development of targeted therapeutic interventions. Aptamers—single-stranded oligonucleotides characterized by high structural plasticity—have emerged as highly versatile tools in cellular and infection microbiology, with their application space growing rapidly across diverse scientific disciplines. These ligands offer unique advantages in stability and modification, positioning them as a robust platform for probing complex biological interactions. This Research Topic focuses on the comprehensive pipeline of aptamer research: from the initial selection and rigorous biophysical characterization of molecular interfaces to their strategic application within diagnostic and therapeutic frameworks. The objective of this collection is to showcase the diverse roles of aptamers as molecular recognition elements within cellular and infection microbiology. We aim to gather research that explores the multifaceted applications of these ligands, from understanding fundamental host-pathogen interactions to developing innovative tools for molecular intervention. By emphasizing the integration of structural bioinformatics, biophysical characterization, and experimental validation, this Research Topic seeks to highlight how aptamers can be used to target a wide array of molecules—including proteins, toxins, and cell-surface proteins—facilitating breakthroughs across all stages of microbiological research and biotechnology. This Research Topic invites contributions exploring the multifaceted applications of aptamers in microbiology, ranging from fundamental biology to advanced biotechnological tools. We welcome Original Research, Methods, Perspectives, Clinical Trials and Brief Research Reports on:- Molecular & Structural Characterization: computational and experimental studies (MD, docking, SPR, ITC) of binding interfaces. - Target Discovery: identification of novel biomarkers in bacteria, viruses, and protozoan parasites using high-affinity probes.- Therapeutic Strategies: neutralizing agents, inhibitors of pathogen adhesion, and targeted delivery systems/ - Diagnostic & Surveillance Innovations: detection assays for clinical or environmental pathogens and antimicrobial resistance markers.- Cell Biology Applications: using aptamers to study host-pathogen interactions and intracellular signalling.- Technological Advances: novel SELEX methodologies and post-selection modifications for complex biological matrices.
