Aquatic Habitat Ecology & Conservation: Continental and Marine Ecosystems Connectivity - Vol. II
This Research Topic focuses on the worldwide threats to riverine, estuarine, and adjacent coastal areas, as well as open oceans, and their potential management solutions. The origins of this Research Topic date back to 2017, when the first volume was launched. The first volume offers an analytical overview of the challenges facing the ecology and conservation of aquatic habitats worldwide. Habitat loss has emerged as the most significant concern for aquatic ecosystems, with a long list of causes, including the damming of rivers, deforestation, pollution, mining, and poor agricultural practices, all characterised by unsustainable development models. Based on this experience, we would like to expand on this topic in another volume. This Research Topic invites review and synthesis papers to showcase research in Environmental and Marine Science. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary overview of the various environmental and anthropogenic variables that influence the distribution of flora and fauna, shaping their ecological interactions within aquatic ecosystems. The Research Topic aims to provide a discussion forum to better understand all potential harm caused by trace metals, organic and inorganic pollutants, microplastics, the role of environmental fluctuations in the nutritional composition of prey species, and the loss of aquatic habitats (e.g., freshwater, estuarine & marine communities in the Tropics, Sub-Tropics, Temperate, and Polar Regions). The Research Topic will delve into both human-induced and natural impacts on aquatic habitats, intended or otherwise, as well as the efforts being made to promote restoration of these ecosystems. All topics related to these central themes are welcome and can be presented in the form of current research methods and findings, review articles, opinion pieces, or expanded case studies and pilot programs designed to better understand the best practices of aquatic ecosystems management and restoration. Local approaches, as well as national and international efforts to preserve and restore the functionality of aquatic ecosystems, are welcome. The outlook of this Research Topic is global in extent and local by intent. Contributions should be not only of interest to those working exclusively with estuaries, but also to those working to protect the surrounding riverine, coastal areas, and oceanic waters. Thus, we invite your suggestions and ideas for contributed articles related to the central themes described above.
