Artificial intelligence and the autonomic nervous system in cardiovascular regulation: Mechanisms, monitoring, and interventions
Autonomic cardiovascular regulation is a dynamic field at the intersection of neurobiology and cardiology, with the autonomic nervous system (ANS) playing a central role in maintaining cardiovascular stability and responding to physiological challenges. Despite substantial progress, dysregulation of autonomic control remains a significant predictor of adverse outcomes in cardiovascular conditions such as myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, and heart failure. Conventional markers - including heart rate variability, heart rate turbulence, and baroreflex sensitivity - have underpinned our understanding and risk stratification for decades. More recently, rapid advances in digital health and artificial intelligence (AI) have introduced innovative tools for continuous monitoring and predictive analytics, moving beyond traditional assessment toward precision cardiovascular care. There is a growing imperative to clarify how AI-enabled solutions can augment established methods for characterizing ANS function and improve patient management. The primary aim of this Research Topic is to consolidate current insights on the mechanisms of autonomic regulation in health and disease, advance the utility of old and new assessment technologies, and examine how digital health platforms and AI-driven analytics are transforming both research and clinical practice. By fostering interdisciplinary contributions, this initiative seeks to uncover actionable knowledge that bridges foundational science, emerging technology, and personalized medicine within cardiovascular autonomic regulation. To provide a focused yet comprehensive exploration, the scope of this Research Topic is centered on mechanistic understanding, assessment modalities, and digital innovations in autonomic cardiovascular control. The topic will not address unrelated neurological or non-cardiovascular autonomic disorders. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Pathophysiological mechanisms underlying autonomic imbalance and cardiovascular diseaseo Established and emerging modalities for autonomic assessment, including their prognostic and clinical relevanceo Integration of AI, wearables, and big data analytics for real-time monitoring and risk predictiono Prognostic value and therapeutic implications of ANS dysfunction in cardiovascular patient careo Pharmacological, device-based, and lifestyle interventions targeting autonomic regulation and their outcomes in cardiovascular diseaseAppendix: We accept submissions of all article types.
