Artificial intelligence-enabled integrative medicine for chronic inflammatory diseases

Chronic inflammatory diseases are characterized by persistent immune activation, tissue remodeling, oxidative stress, fibrosis, and progressive organ dysfunction. Although Western medicine has advanced targeted therapies against inflammatory pathways, many chronic conditions remain difficult to stratify, monitor, and treat effectively because of their heterogeneous immune microenvironments and complex multi-system involvement. Integrative Chinese and Western medicine offers a complementary framework by combining disease-oriented diagnosis, immune-targeted treatment, herbal medicines, natural compounds, and multi-component therapeutic strategies. Meanwhile, artificial intelligence, machine learning, multi-omics integration, network pharmacology, and real-world data analysis are rapidly transforming biomedical research and clinical decision-making. These advances provide new opportunities to decode immune-inflammatory signatures, optimize patient stratification, and develop personalized integrative interventions for chronic inflammatory diseases. In parallel, traditional Chinese medicine and integrative medicine have shown increasing potential in the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, particularly through multi-target regulation of inflammatory signaling, oxidative stress, immune imbalance, and tissue remodeling. Therefore, this Research Topic aims to bring together studies addressing the cellular and molecular basis of chronic disease-associated inflammation, tissue-specific inflammatory microenvironments, biomarker discovery, and translational advances, with particular interest in cross-disciplinary evidence from both modern biomedicine and integrative Chinese and Western medicine. The goal of this Research Topic is to promote studies that use AI-enabled methods to improve diagnosis, immune phenotype classification, syndrome differentiation, biomarker discovery, treatment-response prediction, and therapeutic optimization in integrative medicine. By encouraging mechanistic, computational, experimental, and clinical studies, this Research Topic seeks to advance precision management and translational innovation for chronic inflammatory diseases within an immunology-centered framework. We invite original manuscripts in all formats, including research articles, reviews, case reports, clinical trials, data reports, bioinformatics analyses, and systematic reviews. Contributions should focus on, but not be limited to, the following innovative topics:AI-assisted diagnosis and disease classification in chronic inflammatory diseases: exploring the application of artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, imaging analysis, and clinical decision-support systems in disease diagnosis, immune phenotype classification, patient stratification, and traditional Chinese medicine syndrome differentiation.Data-driven biomarker discovery and multi-omics integration: identifying immune signatures, inflammatory biomarkers, and treatment-response indicators through transcriptomics, single-cell sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, real-world data, and bioinformatics analyses.Integrative Chinese and Western medicine interventions: evaluating how herbal medicines, natural compounds, formula-based therapies, and combined Chinese-Western therapeutic strategies regulate immune imbalance, inflammatory signaling, oxidative stress, fibrosis, senescence, and tissue remodeling.AI-enabled mechanism exploration and therapeutic prediction: investigating network pharmacology, drug repurposing, multi-target regulation, molecular docking, systems biology, and predictive models for optimizing integrative treatment strategies.Translational advances and precision management: promoting clinical trials, real-world evidence, personalized treatment, safety evaluation, and intelligent therapeutic decision-making for chronic inflammatory diseases. Please note that manuscripts dealing with chronic inflammatory disease, their diagnosis or therapy, that don’t have a major focus on immunological mechanisms are out of scope for Frontiers in Immunology.
