Artificial Intelligence for Forest Monitoring, Resilience, and Sustainable Management under Global Change

Forests play a fundamental role in regulating the global climate, conserving biodiversity, sustaining ecosystem services, and supporting human well-being. However, forest ecosystems are increasingly threatened by climate change, extreme disturbances, land-use change, biological invasions, and unsustainable management. At the same time, satellite observations, UAVs, LiDAR, environmental sensor networks, and long-term forest monitoring programs have generated rapidly expanding volumes of forest-related data. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), Earth observation technologies, and environmental sensing have created unprecedented opportunities to improve forest monitoring, ecological prediction, and adaptive forest management. Nevertheless, significant challenges remain in integrating AI with ecological theory, enhancing model interpretability and transferability, and translating data-driven insights into effective forest management practices. This Research Topic aims to provide an interdisciplinary platform for researchers working at the interface of forest ecology, remote sensing, geospatial science, and artificial intelligence. We seek contributions that develop innovative AI methodologies and demonstrate their applications in forest monitoring, ecosystem resilience, carbon dynamics, biodiversity conservation, disturbance assessment, ecological restoration, and sustainable forest management under global environmental change. This Research Topic welcomes interdisciplinary studies that advance artificial intelligence applications in forest science and global change research.
