Artificial Intelligence in Cancer Research and Care: Advancing Public Health Through Innovation

Cancer remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, presenting immense challenges to public health systems. Despite major advances in genomics and therapeutics, disparities in prevention, early detection, and access to care persist across populations. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force capable of reshaping cancer research and management. By integrating data from imaging, genomics, pathology, electronic health records, and population health studies, AI can uncover patterns that inform early diagnosis, personalized risk assessment, and optimized treatment delivery. Moreover, AI-driven tools can enhance screening efficiency, streamline clinical workflows, and support resource allocation within public health systems. However, the integration of AI into cancer care requires rigorous validation, ethical oversight, and equitable implementation to ensure global benefits. This Research Topic focuses on advancing the use of AI to bridge scientific innovation and population health in cancer prevention, detection, and treatment. The goal of this Research Topic is to explore how artificial intelligence can strengthen the continuum of cancer care—from population-level screening to personalized treatment—while promoting health equity and system efficiency. We aim to highlight innovative applications of AI that enhance public health surveillance, improve clinical decision-making, and reduce disparities in cancer outcomes. This collection seeks to bridge computational advances with real-world healthcare implementation, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration among data scientists, oncologists, and public health professionals. Ultimately, this topic aims to promote responsible and inclusive innovation in AI-driven cancer research and care.We invite submissions that address the intersection of AI, cancer, and public health. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:• Predictive modeling for cancer risk stratification and disease surveillance;• Integration of AI with digital health platforms and electronic health records;• Machine learning for optimizing cancer prevention and treatment strategies;• Ethical, legal, and social implications of AI in cancer care and data governance;• AI approaches for addressing disparities and improving access to oncology services. We welcome original research, systematic reviews, perspectives, and policy-focused papers that demonstrate how AI can advance both scientific discovery and equitable healthcare delivery in oncology.
