Artificial Intelligence in Women’s Health: Advancing Equity in Rural and Low-Resource Settings

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming healthcare delivery by enabling earlier detection, targeted interventions, and more efficient resource allocation. In women’s health, AI tools are increasingly being used to screen for conditions such as heart disease, breast cancer, hypertensive disorders, and pregnancy-related conditions. In rural or low-resource settings, where health systems are known to face more constraints related to workforce shortages, infrastructure, and access to specialist care, AI tools offer potential to support earlier detection, task-shifting, and more efficient use of limited resources. Emerging applications include mobile and point-of-care diagnostics for screening and risk assessment. However, evidence on how these tools are used, adapted, and sustained in low-resource environments remains fragmented. This Research Topic seeks applied research and real-world experiences that demonstrate how AI tools are being used to advance women’s health in low-resource settings globally. The goal of this Research Topic is to highlight the practice use of AI tools to improve women’s health outcomes and quality of life in low-resource settings, including low- and middle-income countries and underserved contexts within high-income countries. We invite submissions that examine how AI technologies are implemented in real-world environments, including primary care, community health, and maternal health services. Of particular interest are studies that address feasibility, acceptability, scalabilities, and health systems integration, as well as ethical and governance considerations. Contributions may focus on screening, diagnosis, risk prediction, care coordination, and public health applications. By centering the use of AI in constrained settings, this collection aims to move beyond proof-of-concept towards evidence that informs policy, practice, and equitable deployment of AI in women’s health. Our goal is to bring visibility to scalable solutions that center women’s health equity through the lens of AI.• AI-based screening and diagnostic tools in women’s health• AI-enabled screening, diagnostics, and decision support at the point of care• Community-based and frontline health worker use of AI technologies• Implementation, feasibility, and sustainability of AI tools in constrained health systems• Community-engaged approaches to AI development and deployment• Task-shifting and workforce support through AI applications• Case studies from rural, remote, or low- and middle-income country settings• Cost-effectiveness and sustainability of AI interventions• Integrating AI into health systems or primary care for women Topic editors: Jessica Sexton, Aleena Wojcieszek, Andrea Cooley Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/79411/artificial-intelligence-in-womens-health-advancing-equity-in-rural-and-low-resource-settings
