Bedside Imaging, EIT, Lung Ultrasound, and Monitoring-Guided Respiratory Care in the ICU

The integration of advanced bedside imaging and physiological monitoring has transformed the management of critically ill patients with respiratory failure. This Research Topic examines the full spectrum of imaging and monitoring technologies applied to respiratory care in the ICU—from electrical impedance tomography (EIT) and its role in personalised PEEP titration, through to AI-powered lung ultrasound, diaphragm ultrasonography, and non-invasive diagnostic imaging for ARDS. Contributions are invited that address the comparative diagnostic performance of lung ultrasound versus conventional chest radiography, the evolving evidence base for EIT-guided ventilation, the role of ultrasound in monitoring fluid status in patients on renal replacement therapy, and the integration of biomarker profiling with imaging data to guide personalised respiratory care. Machine learning approaches to perioperative risk assessment using biomarker data, and the challenges of non-invasive ventilation in post-extubation respiratory failure, are also within scope. This Research Topic aims to define a clinically rigorous and forward-looking agenda for imaging-guided respiratory management in the ICU.
