BINA 2026 Empowering BioImaging: Fostering Community Engagement, Tool Development, and Expertise Enhancement for Greater Strides in Image Informatics

The intersection of bioimaging and bioinformatics has become a cornerstone for significant advancements in life sciences. With the rapid evolution of imaging technologies and the substantial influx of data, there is an increasing demand for innovative computational tools and methodologies to accurately analyze and interpret complex biological images. Bioimaging not only provides deep insights into cellular and sub-cellular structures but also fuels the discovery of novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets. However, these advances hinge on robust community engagement, collaborative tool development, and continuous enhancement of expertise in the field. As we continue to navigate big data challenges, the integration of bioimaging with bioinformatics is pivotal to ensuring the reproducibility, accessibility, and scalability of scientific research. This Research Topic, as part of Frontiers in Bioinformatics’ collaboration with Bioimaging North America (BINA 2026), aims to empower the bioimaging community by fostering an environment conducive to collaboration, innovation, and expertise development. We seek to bring together researchers, developers, and practitioners to share insights, tools, and best practices that can accelerate progress in Bioimaging bioinformatics. Our goal is to highlight novel approaches, promote the development of user-friendly tools, and provide a platform for the dissemination of knowledge that can bridge the gap between imaging and computational analysis. We welcome contributions across various sub-themes including, but not limited to:• Development of novel bioimaging computational tools, including analysis and acquisition software.• Optimization and benchmarking of existing bioimaging computational methods.• Studies demonstrating the application of bioinformatics in bioimaging.• Community-driven datasets and collaborative projects making use of bioinformatics.• Perspectives, reviews, and case studies on enhancing expertise in bioinformatics for the purpose of bioimaging. We particularly encourage submissions leveraging the Technology and Code article type, ensuring tools are accessible and reproducible by the wider community. Additional article types are also considered, including Original Research, Reviews, Perspectives, and Data Reports. By focusing on these key themes, this Research Topic seeks to cultivate a collaborative and innovative ecosystem that propels the advancement of bioimaging. Early submissions are welcomed.
