Bioactive Compounds in the Prevention and Management of Metabolic Diseases

The field of nutritional science increasingly recognizes the importance of dietary bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, fiber-associated molecules, and antioxidants, in human health, particularly regarding metabolic diseases. The global prevalence of conditions like type 2 diabetes, obesity, fatty liver disease, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome has spurred research into the potential preventive and health-promoting benefits of functional ingredients beyond traditional nutrients. Recent studies illuminate the multifaceted actions of these bioactives, highlighting their capacity to modulate inflammation, oxidative stress, insulin resistance, and lipid metabolism. Notably, the regulation of gut microbiota and intestinal barrier function has emerged as a promising avenue through which dietary components exert systemic effects. However, despite compelling experimental and epidemiological evidence, there are ongoing debates about the effective doses, bioavailability, and long-term impacts of these compounds. Questions also remain around individual variability in response and their integration into public health strategies. This Research Topic aims to clarify the roles of dietary bioactive compounds in metabolic disease prevention and management. It seeks to address key questions regarding their mechanisms of action, clinical efficacy, optimal sources and intake levels, and interactions within complex food matrices. Articles that dissect molecular pathways, as well as clinical and population-based investigations, are welcome to advance our understanding of how dietary interventions can be tailored to improve metabolic health outcomes.Given the diverse nature of metabolic diseases and the wide range of bioactive compounds found in foods, this Research Topic encourages submissions that explore both targeted and holistic approaches. To gather further insights into the multifactorial impact of diet on metabolic health, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Mechanisms of action of dietary bioactive compounds in metabolic disease modulationo Clinical and preclinical studies evaluating efficacy in the prevention and management of obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, fatty liver, and metabolic syndromeo Impact of bioactive compounds on inflammation, oxidative stress, insulin signaling, and lipid metabolismo Interactions between dietary bioactives, gut microbiota, and the intestinal barriero Bioavailability, metabolism, and individual variability in response to functional dietary ingredientso Development of functional foods and evidence-based dietary strategies for metabolic health promotionWe welcome all article types accepted by Frontiers in Nutrition, with particular interest in Original Research, Reviews, Mini Reviews, Clinical Trials, Systematic Reviews, Meta-Analyses, and Perspectives.
