Bioactive Compounds Present in Essential Oils - Vol II: Advances and Applications in a Multidisciplinary Approach

Following the impactful contributions of the initial collection Bioactive Compounds Present in Essential Oils: Advances and Pharmacological Applications, we are pleased to introduce a second Research Topic designed to investigate the diverse applications and recent advancements in this evolving field.Bioactive compounds have been the subject of studies in recent years, whether for pharmacological, food or biotechnological applications. This interest may be related to the search for molecules that are increasingly less cytotoxic to humans and other animals. In this context, volatile compounds present in essential oils emerge as a viable alternative to meet the growing demand for natural bioactive compounds. In this sense, we have observed significant advances and applications of essential oils in several areas of knowledge. It is well known that essential oils can integrate different areas of knowledge through their multiple applications. For example, essential oils have antioxidant, antimicrobial, phytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective potential, among others, which makes them relevant to several industrial segments, such as food, pharmaceuticals, agribusiness, among others. In this context, the search for increasingly interdisciplinary studies is essential, as it is clear that there are connections between areas that previously seemed unrelated. This collection aims to bring new perspectives on essential oils and their applications, such as antimicrobials, biotechnology, bio-transformations and their technological, agricultural and food applications. Through in vitro, in silico and in vivo studies, we can increasingly connect the knowledge of researchers and promote significant advances in science and technology. This Research Topic will be dedicated to advanced studies on essential oils (EOs) and their bioactive applications. This topic strongly welcomes, but is not limited to, submissions in the form of Original Research or Literature Review articles, that cover, but are not limited to, the following themes:• Advances in the understanding of the bioactive effects of EOs and their applications in EO research• Mechanisms of action, including antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties of EOs• Extraction techniques and chemical characterization of EOs for industrial and scientific applications• Insights and advances in the use of EOs in biotechnology, bio-transformations, and agricultural applications• Interdisciplinary studies connecting EOs to food, pharmaceutical, and agro-industrial sectors• In vitro, in silico, and in vivo studies exploring the potential of EOs in natural product researchStudies need to comply with the best practice guidelines of the section if plant extracts or other complex mixtures are investigated including the Four Pillars of Best Practice in Ethnopharmacology. A detailed description of the material studied, its extraction, and processing is essential. You can freely download the full version here. Please self-assess your MS using the ConPhyMP tool, and follow the standards established in the ConPhyMP statement Front. Pharmacol. 13:953205. Please note the traditional context including the primary background and modern uses with supporting references must be included in the manuscript introduction. Purely in silico approaches using complex mixtures (extracts) are generally not considered.Topic editor, Prof. Marcello Iriti, is Advisory Board of ORALTEC S.r.l.
