Bioengineered Nanomedicine for Immunity Regulation in Human Respiratory Infectious Diseases
Respiratory infectious diseases represent a significant global health challenge, contributing to high rates of morbidity and mortality. The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the urgent need for effective prevention and treatment strategies to mitigate these impacts on public health, as well as economic and social development. Traditional approaches, such as vaccination and immunotherapy, have shown potential in regulating the immune system to combat these diseases. However, the advent of bioengineered nanomedicine offers a promising frontier in enhancing these strategies. Nanomedicine, with its ability to improve pharmacokinetic properties and therapeutic outcomes through controllable drug loading, adjustable size distribution, and targeted delivery, has been increasingly utilized in the development of nanovaccines and immunotherapies. Notably, the FDA-approved mRNA nanovaccines for COVID-19, mRNA-1273 and BNT162b, have demonstrated significant advantages over traditional vaccines, highlighting the potential of nanomedicine in addressing respiratory infectious diseases. Despite these advancements, there remains a need for further exploration into the mechanisms and development of nanomedicine to fully harness its capabilities in immunity regulation. This Research Topic aims to advance the knowledge of nanovaccines and nanotherapeutics against significant human respiratory infectious diseases. The primary objectives include exploring novel nanotechnology for designing and developing highly effective vaccines and therapeutics, understanding the mechanisms of action of nanovaccines and immune-nanotherapeutics, and innovating new nanocarriers for vaccine development. By addressing these objectives, the research seeks to answer critical questions about the efficacy and mechanisms of nanomedicine in immunity regulation, ultimately contributing to more effective prevention and treatment strategies for respiratory infectious diseases. To gather further insights into the application of bioengineered nanomedicine in immunity regulation for respiratory infectious diseases, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Establishment of novel nanotechnology for the design and development of highly effective vaccines and therapeutics against respiratory infectious diseases;- Cutting-edge development of nanomedicine with immunity regulation for preventing and treating respiratory infectious diseases;- Mechanisms of action of nanovaccines and immune-nanotherapeutics for respiratory infectious diseases;- Design and development of new nanocarriers for vaccines, including but not limited to lipid-based materials, polymer-based carriers, protein/peptide carriers, inorganic carriers, and others.
