Bioengineered neuromodulation and bioelectronic platforms for cardiovascular diagnosis and therapy

Cardiovascular diseases such as arrhythmia, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, and heart failure remain leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite advances in pharmacological and interventional therapies, effective diagnostic and therapeutic options for autonomic imbalance, electrical instability, and post-ischemic remodeling are still limited.Rapid progress in bioengineering, neuromodulation, and bioelectronic device design now offers new opportunities to monitor, predict, and control cardiac function with high precision. Novel neural–cardiac interfaces, implantable and wearable sensors, and closed-loop control systems enable targeted modulation of cardiac and autonomic circuits. However, translational integration between basic neurocardiac science, engineering innovation, and clinical application remains incomplete. This Research Topic aims to bridge these gaps by highlighting bioengineered tools, devices, and neural–cardiac interfaces for the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of cardiovascular disease, with a focus on preclinical and translational bioengineering advances. This Research Topic will encompass emerging bioengineering and neuromodulation strategies aimed at advancing the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, with a particular emphasis on bioelectronic and device-based approaches.Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:Novel neural–cardiac interfaces and bioelectronic circuitsImplantable, wearable, and organ-on-chip platforms for cardiac sensing and controlBioelectronic and optoelectronic technologies for cardiac rhythm and contractility modulationVagus nerve, stellate ganglion, and spinal cord stimulation for autonomic regulationClosed-loop autonomic neuromodulation and electroceutical approaches for arrhythmia prevention and myocardial protectionBiomaterials and biofabrication strategies for stable, long-term neural–cardiac interfacesOrgan-on-chip or ex vivo platforms for testing neuromodulatory devicesComputational modeling of neuro-cardiac networks supporting device design or control strategiesMachine-learning and data-driven methods integrated with sensors or neuromodulation platforms, including validated algorithms for real-time detection of ischemia and arrhythmiasMulti-omic and electrophysiological integration linked to the development or optimization of bioengineered devices or neuromodulatory interventionsTranslational and preclinical studies exploring mechanistic insights, device development, and early-stage clinical application concepts are particularly encouraged. Purely clinical, epidemiological, or exclusively computational studies without a clear and validated bioengineering or biotechnology component fall outside the scope of this Special Issue. The goal is to bring together interdisciplinary advances that connect bioengineering innovation with neuromodulatory therapies to improve cardiac health outcomes.
