Biofilms as Barriers: Mechanisms, Efflux Synergy, and Disruption Strategies
Biofilms remain a dominant driver of treatment failure by shielding pathogens from antibiotic action and immune clearance. This Research Topic will dissect molecular mechanisms of biofilm formation and maturation, the interplay with efflux pumps and stress responses, and how microenvironments modulate antibiotic penetration and efficacy. We invite studies spanning mechanistic biology, imaging and omics of biofilm states, and translational strategies to prevent, disrupt, or disperse biofilms. Priority topics include:Biofilm–efflux cross-talk and multidrug tolerance.New targets within the biofilm matrix and signaling pathways.Disruptive modalities (enzymatic dispersal, anti-adhesion, matrix-targeting agents).New tools and techniques for detecting bacterial biofilms and whole-cell drug efflux mechanismsDelivery innovations that overcome the biofilm barrier (e.g., nanoparticles, conjugates). Submissions can include original research, methods, high-quality reviews, and position pieces outlining clinical implementation pathways.
