Biofunctionalized Nanomaterials for Sustainable Agriculture and Environmental Applications

Nanotechnology contributes significantly to the development of sustainable agricultural and environmental solutions. However, conventional nanomaterials may pose toxicity and specificity issues. Biofunctionalized nanomaterials, which are created by modifying nanoparticles with biological molecules like enzymes, proteins, or polysaccharides, provide a safer and more efficient alternative. These materials combine the functional versatility of nanomaterials with the specificity and biocompatibility of biological systems. In agriculture, they can improve nutrient delivery, pest control, and plant stress tolerance, reducing the need for harmful agrochemicals. In environmental applications, biofunctionalized nanomaterials serve as catalysts, biosorbents, and sensors for pollutant detection and bioremediation. Their development through green synthesis improves sustainability, making them a promising approach to increasing eco-friendly agricultural productivity and environmental protection. The goal of this Research Topic is to address the growing demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly nanotechnological innovations in agriculture and environmental management. While nanomaterials have enormous potential, their conventional forms frequently face challenges, such as toxicity, limited selectivity, and environmental persistence. Biofunctionalized nanomaterials, which incorporate biological molecules, provide increased specificity, stability, and biocompatibility. This collection aims to collect recent research on their synthesis, properties, and multifunctional applications in fields of agriculture and environment protection. This Research Topic aims to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and highlight pathways for developing next-generation nanomaterials that meet global sustainability and green chemistry goals by combining biological and nanotechnological approaches. This Research Topic welcomes Original Research articles, Reviews, and Perspectives on all forms and processing strategies for biofunctionalized nanomaterials with the objective of advancing sustainable agriculture and environmental protection. It focuses on recent advances in the synthesis, characterization, and multifunctional applications of biologically modified nanomaterials, bringing together nanotechnology, biotechnology, and environmental sciences. Key themes of interest include but are not limited to the following:• Green synthesis approaches• Biofunctionalization with enzymes, proteins, polysaccharides, or microorganisms• Applications of the above in nutrient delivery, crop protection, pollutant degradation, and environmental sensing• Research into bio-nano interactions, mechanisms of action, and biosafety assessments. By spotlighting multidisciplinary research efforts, this collection aims to promote eco-friendly innovations and contribute to the development of biocompatible nanomaterials that improve agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability.
