Biomarkers of Disease and Prognosis in Gastrointestinal Diseases
Gastrointestinal diseases, including colorectal, gastric, pancreatic, and hepatobiliary cancers as well as inflammatory bowel disease, represent a major global health burden. Despite advances in diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, many patients are still diagnosed at advanced stages, highlighting the urgent need for reliable biomarkers for early detection, prognosis assessment, and personalized treatment strategies.Recent advances in genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, microbiome research, and liquid biopsy technologies have accelerated the discovery of promising diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers. In addition, emerging analytical approaches such as artificial intelligence and multi-omics integration are creating new opportunities to enhance biomarker discovery, improve disease stratification, and support clinical decision-making.This Research Topic aims to bring together high-quality original research and review articles that explore the discovery, validation, and clinical application of biomarkers in gastrointestinal diseases. Particular emphasis will be placed on translational studies that bridge laboratory discoveries and clinical practice, ultimately contributing to improved diagnosis, prognosis evaluation, and precision medicine approaches for patients with gastrointestinal disorders. We welcome submissions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Discovery and validation of diagnostic biomarkers for gastrointestinal diseases and cancers.- Prognostic biomarkers associated with disease progression, survival outcomes, and treatment response.- Molecular and genetic biomarkers in colorectal, gastric, pancreatic, hepatobiliary, and other gastrointestinal diseases.- Circulating biomarkers and liquid biopsy approaches, including circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), microRNAs, and extracellular vesicles.- Microbiome-related biomarkers and host–microbiome interactions in gastrointestinal disease pathogenesis and prognosis.- Immune and inflammatory biomarkers and their role in disease development and therapeutic response.- Multi-omics approaches (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics) for biomarker discovery.- Artificial intelligence and machine learning applications in biomarker identification and predictive modeling.- Biomarkers for early detection, screening, and risk stratification in gastrointestinal diseases.- Translational research linking biomarker discoveries to clinical implementation and precision medicine.- Biomarkers predicting response to targeted therapies and immunotherapy in gastrointestinal cancers.- Integration of biomarker-based approaches into personalized management of gastrointestinal diseases. We encourage the submission of diverse article types, including original research, systematic reviews, reviews, and methodological studies that advance biomarker research and its clinical application in gastrointestinal disease.
