Blue Carbon for Climate-Resilient Fisheries and Aquaculture: Advancing Nature-Based Solutions from Science to Policy and Practice
Climate change is increasingly threatening marine and coastal ecosystems, with profound implications for fisheries, aquaculture, biodiversity, food security and coastal livelihoods. Blue carbon ecosystems, including mangroves, seagrasses, salt marshes, macroalgae, and other vegetated coastal habitats, offer powerful nature-based solutions by enhancing carbon sequestration while supporting ecosystem resilience, coastal protection, and sustainable aquatic production. However, translating scientific knowledge into effective management policies and large-scale implementation remains a significant challenge. This Research Topic aims to bring together interdisciplinary research that advances the role of blue carbon ecosystems in developing climate-resilient fisheries and aquaculture. We welcome original research articles, reviews, perspectives, and case studies that generate robust scientific evidence and practical solutions for the conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of blue carbon ecosystems. Particular emphasis is placed on studies that bridge science, policy, and practice through innovative monitoring approaches, carbon accounting and Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) frameworks, ecosystem restoration, climate adaptation strategies, governance, and decision-support tools. This collection also seeks contributions that demonstrate how blue carbon ecosystems enhance fishery productivity, support climate-smart aquaculture, strengthen biodiversity conservation, improve ecosystem services, and promote sustainable coastal livelihoods. Research addressing policy frameworks, climate finance, community engagement, scalable restoration models, and implementation pathways that facilitate evidence-based management and long-term resilience is encouraged.By integrating ecological, socio-economic, technological, and governance perspectives, this Research Topic aims to provide actionable knowledge that supports climate-smart marine resource management and informs policies and practices for sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, and resilient coastal ecosystems in a changing climate. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Blue carbon ecosystem restoration and conservation for fisheries and aquaculture- Carbon accounting, MRV, permanence, and additionality- Nature-based solutions for climate adaptation and coastal resilience- Climate-smart fisheries and aquaculture supported by blue carbon ecosystems- Ecosystem services, biodiversity, and sustainable production- Decision-support tools, governance, policy, and scalable implementation Topic editors: Ranjith Lakshmanan, Jayasiri Bentotage, Ferosekhan Shajahan, Md Monirul Islam Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/84728/blue-carbon-for-climate-resilient-fisheries-and-aquaculture-advancing-nature-based-solutions-from-science-to-policy-and-practice
