Brain digital twins: toward clinical adoption
Virtual Brain Models (VBMs) are emerging computational tools promising to revolutionize personalized and precision medicine. VBMs reproduce brain functional dynamics through a generative model that can be constructed and optimized against single subject data, thereby generating what is called a brain digital twin (BDT). BDTs can provide critical information about parameters of network functioning and connectivity and are increasingly being explored as tools to understand disease mechanisms, predict disease progression, and support pharmacological, neurosurgical, and neurostimulation interventions. This topic addresses the foundations of BDTs along with the requirements for clinical adoption, including validation, ethics and legislation, informatic infrastructures, FAIR data practices, sustainability, and equitable access. The contribution of scientists from different disciplines and of clinicians addressing neurological and psychiatric disorders, ageing, neuropharmacology, and neuromodulation is welcome.
