Brain-meningeal immunity and the glymphatic system in neurological disorders: Volume II
Brain-meningeal immunity is increasingly recognized as a central player in the complex network of interactions within the central nervous system (CNS). Beyond serving as protective barriers, the meninges are now understood as critical mediators of neuroimmune communication, CNS homeostasis, and inflammatory regulation. Recent studies link disruptions in brain-meningeal immune functions to the onset and progression of various neurological disorders—including Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, brain tumor and neuroinfections. Emerging evidence highlights the essential roles of the meningeal lymphatic system and the glymphatic system in CNS waste clearance, immune surveillance, and fluid dynamics, alongside immune cell activity and cytokine signaling. However, the full scope of these interconnected mechanisms remains incompletely understood. This Research Topic aims to explore the intricate relationship between meningeal immunity, the glymphatic system, and neurological diseases. Our goal is to identify novel therapeutic targets and diagnostic strategies by investigating how meningeal and glymphatic pathways influence neurological health and disease pathogenesis. Key questions include understanding the precise mechanisms through which meningeal immune cells, glymphatic flow, meningeal lymphatic drainage, and innate immune responses affect disease outcomes, and how these insights can be translated into clinical applications.Focusing on the intersection of meningeal biology, glymphatic research, and neurology, this Research Topic welcomes contributions spanning from fundamental mechanisms to applied clinical studies. We encourage submissions that provide molecular, cellular, and systems-level insights into brain-meningeal-glymphatic crosstalk. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:• Dynamics of meningeal immune cells in neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration• Roles of the glymphatic system and meningeal lymphatics in CNS waste clearance and immune surveillance• Mediators such as cytokines and chemokines in brain-meningeal-glymphatic interactions• Advances in imaging or omics technologies for assessing meningeal immunity and glymphatic function• Therapeutic strategies targeting meningeal immunity and/or the glymphatic system in neurological disordersSubmitted work should be aligned with the broader theme and present significant, reproducible findings. Submissions may include original research, comprehensive reviews, or perspective articles. Both clinical and preclinical studies are encouraged, and all manuscripts will undergo rigorous peer review. This Research Topic is the second volume of Brain-meningeal immunity and the glymphatic system in neurological disorders.
