Bridging Earth Sciences and Policy: Advances in Integrated Disaster Risk Management, volume II
This Research Topic is Volume II of a series. The previous volumes can be found here: Integrated Disaster Risk Management: From Earth Sciences to Policy Making Disaster Risk Management (DRM) is a critical field where advancements in science and technology have the potential to significantly mitigate the impacts of disasters globally. Despite considerable progress over recent decades, the frequency and severity of disasters continue to escalate, as evidenced by the staggering figures from the first two decades of the 21st century alone, where approximately 7,348 disaster events led to 1.23 million human losses and affected over 4 billion people, resulting in economic losses amounting to 2.97 trillion USD. A key challenge remains bridging the gap between the generation of scientific knowledge and its practical application. Strengthening the science-policy and practice interface within DRM is essential for effective disaster reduction and resilience-building.This Research Topic aims to shine a light on the critical integration of research findings into DRM practices, particularly through cross-disciplinary approaches within Earth sciences. Our objective is to advance our understanding by exploring examples of informed DRM implementation and highlighting successful convergence between research outputs and policy formulation. Special emphasis is placed on aligning with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 (SFDRR), which provides a global blueprint for reducing disaster risk through strategic priorities. To gather comprehensive insights into DRM strategies, we welcome submissions on a wide range of topics, including:• Earth science research applied to Disaster Risk Reduction and Management• Multi, inter, and transdisciplinary efforts oriented to Disaster Risk Management• Practical research studies on Disaster Risk Reduction• Implementation of effective science-based disaster risk policies and practices• Effective scientific approaches to risk reduction• Disaster risk research from systemic and multi-risk perspectives• Multi-hazards and Early Warning Systems: policy formulation and practice• Translation, communication, and use of knowledge on disaster risk reductionWe invite Original Research Articles, Comprehensive Reviews, and papers documenting collaborative multi-stakeholder efforts supporting the SFDRR implementation, emphasizing the four main priorities of the framework: understanding disaster risk, improving disaster risk governance, investing in resilience, and enhancing disaster preparedness.
