Bridging environmental monitoring, human biomonitoring, and risk assessment for enhanced health outcomes
The field of environmental health has seen increasing challenges due to the complexity and variety of contaminants that threaten ecosystems and public health. From industrial activities to urbanization, human actions continue to introduce both inorganic and organic contaminants into the environment. This problem necessitates comprehensive, multidisciplinary approaches that integrate environmental monitoring, human biomonitoring, risk assessment, and emerging remediation technologies. Current efforts have been dedicated to not only understanding the extent of these contaminants but also finding innovative ways to prevent and mitigate associated risks. Despite significant advancements, there remain gaps in our knowledge concerning the long-term health effects of exposure and effective strategies for remediation. Ongoing debates focus on the appropriate implementation of biosorption, nanomaterials, and other advanced processes in diverse environmental contexts. This Research Topic aims to gather high-quality scientific contributions that advance our understanding of the intersection between environmental monitoring and human health. The objective is to foster research that spans three key interconnected areas: Environmental Monitoring and Remediation Technologies, Human Biomonitoring and Risk Assessment, and Health-Environment Interactions. By examining exposure routes, biomarker development, and risk modeling, researchers can develop preventative strategies and inform adaptive regulatory frameworks. Specific questions addressed include the potential for novel low-cost remediation technologies, the enhancement of biomonitoring methods, and the direct link between human health outcomes and environmental contaminants. To gather further insights in environmental monitoring, biomonitoring, and risk assessment, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes: - Development of analytical methods for detecting environmental contaminants in various media - Innovations in sustainable and scalable remediation technologies like biosorption and nanomaterials - Biomonitoring studies focused on exposure biomarkers and risk assessment models - Interdisciplinary research on the impacts of contaminant exposure on public health - Studies investigating toxicological mechanisms of heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, and endocrine disruptors Researchers, policymakers, and practitioners with interests in environmental sciences, toxicology, public health, and remediation technologies are invited to contribute. Results from this Research Topic will provide practical insights and strengthen the scientific foundation for environmental policies and sustainable management practices in the face of 21st-century environmental challenges.
