Bridging Genomic Technology and Traditional Wisdom for Sustainable Native Crop Enhancement

The integration of genomics with traditional knowledge has become a critical focus in modern agricultural practices, particularly in the conservation and enhancement of native crops. The primary challenge lies in marrying cutting-edge genomic technologies with the accumulated wisdom of indigenous agricultural practices. However, while genomic advancements provide in-depth insights into crop genetics, they often overlook the rich, contextual information offered by traditional knowledge systems. Recent studies have highlighted significant progress in using genomic data to understand crop evolution, population structure, and the complex interplay between domestication and local adaptation. Despite this, gaps remain, especially in how these technologies can be effectively integrated with traditional methods to address current challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss. This Research Topic aims to bridge this gap by exploring the synergies between genomic tools and traditional knowledge to promote the evolutionary conservation, participatory breeding, and improvement of native and underutilized crops. By focusing on regions of high agrobiodiversity such as the Andes, the research will strive to uncover how advanced genomic insights can be combined with indigenous methods to enhance crop resilience and productivity. This will involve addressing questions around effective collaboration, identifying compatible techniques, and understanding how these combined approaches can mitigate the impacts of climate change and land-use modifications on native crops. To gather further insights in the application of genomics and traditional knowledge systems, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:-Phylogenomics and evolutionary relationships of native crops.-Understanding population structures via genomic tools.-The role of domestication in shaping crop genomes.-Local adaptation mechanisms in response to environmental changes.-Success stories of farmer-led breeding initiatives.-The impact of traditional agroecosystems on maintaining genetic diversity.Submissions can include original research articles, reviews, and case studies focusing on these themes.
