Bridging Geoscience and Energy Transition: Insights into Alternative Resources and CCUS Technologies

The field of Energy Transition Geosciences is at the forefront of addressing the urgent need to shift from fossil fuels to cleaner energy sources in response to climate change. With many countries committing to net-zero emissions by mid-century, the role of geoscientists has become increasingly crucial. They are tasked with exploring and optimizing alternative energy resources, such as geothermal and hydrothermal systems, and improving carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies. Recent studies have highlighted the potential of integrating sedimentology and geophysics to enhance our understanding of subsurface CO2 reservoirs and critical mineral deposits essential for renewable energy infrastructure. However, despite these advancements, there remains a significant gap in comprehensive research that consolidates these findings and addresses the multifaceted challenges of the energy transition. This gap underscores the need for a concerted effort to compile and disseminate high-quality research that can guide policymakers, industry leaders, and scholars in navigating the evolving energy landscape. This research topic aims to compile original research and critical reviews that explore the intersection of sedimentology and geophysics within the context of Energy Transition Geosciences. The primary objectives include advancing the understanding of alternative energy sources, refining CCUS methodologies, and exploring critical mineral resources. By addressing these areas, the research seeks to answer key questions about the optimization of energy transition processes and test hypotheses related to the integration of geoscientific data in energy resource management. To gather further insights in the expansive domain of Energy Transition Geosciences, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Integration of sedimentological and geophysical data for energy exploration- Characterization and optimization of subsurface CO2 reservoirs and seals- Exploration and assessment of critical minerals for renewable energy infrastructure- Refinement of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) workflows- Investigations into historical global warming events and their implications for current energy strategies- Critical reviews offering authoritative perspectives on energy transition challenges and opportunities.
