Building Climate-Resilient Farming Systems Under Increasing Climate Extremes
Agricultural systems worldwide are increasingly challenged by climate extremes, including prolonged droughts, heat waves, erratic rainfall, floods, and extreme weather events. These stresses threaten crop productivity, livestock performance, soil health, water resources, biodiversity, and farm livelihoods. The impacts are particularly severe in rainfed and resource-constrained regions where agricultural production remains highly vulnerable to climatic variability. Enhancing the resilience of farming systems has therefore emerged as a critical priority for ensuring global food security, environmental sustainability, and rural prosperity. Recent advances in climate-smart agriculture, conservation agriculture, precision resource management, agroforestry, digital advisory services, and integrated farming systems offer promising pathways for adaptation. However, substantial knowledge gaps remain regarding the effectiveness, scalability, and long-term sustainability of these interventions across diverse agroecological and socio-economic settings. This Research Topic aims to advance scientific understanding and practical solutions for developing resilient farming systems capable of withstanding increasing climate extremes while maintaining productivity, profitability, and environmental integrity. We seek to address the pressing challenge of adapting agricultural systems to rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, water scarcity, land degradation, and growing climatic uncertainty. Recent advances in climate-resilient crop management, stress-tolerant cultivars, precision agriculture technologies, regenerative and conservation agriculture practices, integrated crop–livestock systems, agroforestry, remote sensing, artificial intelligence, and climate advisory services have created new opportunities for strengthening resilience. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of these approaches often varies across production environments and scales. This collection aims to synthesize emerging evidence, identify successful adaptation pathways, quantify resilience outcomes, and promote interdisciplinary approaches that integrate agronomic, ecological, hydrological, socio-economic, and policy dimensions. Ultimately, the Research Topic seeks to support the transition toward sustainable, resource-efficient, and climate-resilient agricultural systems capable of meeting future food security challenges. We welcome Original Research Articles, Reviews, Mini Reviews, Perspectives, Methods papers, Case Studies, and Policy Analyses addressing resilience-building strategies in agricultural systems.
