Building Nutrition Sensitive and Climate Resilient Food Systems: Innovation Adoption, Supply Chain Shocks, Price Dynamics and Consumer Behaviour

The field of food systems research is increasingly focused on the intersecting challenges of climate change, market instability, and shifting dietary patterns, all of which have profound implications for human nutrition. Currently, food systems worldwide are confronted by supply chain disruptions, extreme weather events, price fluctuations, and evolving consumer demands. These disruptions not only threaten agricultural production but also compromise food availability, affordability, and the nutritional quality of diets. Recent studies have underscored how climate-smart agricultural innovations, supply chain robustness, and market interventions can partially mitigate such risks, yet substantial evidence gaps remain regarding their impacts on nutritional outcomes. Additionally, debates persist on how best to ensure that resilience strategies reach the nutritionally vulnerable and effectively traverse the full food value chain. There is a pressing need for integrative research that connects upstream innovations and market shifts with downstream impacts on dietary diversity, micronutrient adequacy, and overall nutrition equity for diverse populations. This Research Topic aims to advance understanding of how climate risk, innovation uptake, supply chain dynamics, price trends, and consumer behaviour interact to shape nutrition sensitive and climate resilient food systems. The primary objectives are to identify which interventions most effectively enhance both resilience and nutrition, reveal mechanisms through which supply or price shocks alter food access and diet quality, and clarify the consumer and policy responses that promote or impede nutrition equity. By elucidating these connections, the Research Topic seeks to inform actionable policies and models for building food systems that deliver sustainable, affordable, and healthy diets for all, even amidst ongoing climate and market disruptions. To gather further insights in the fields of nutrition and food system resilience, we welcome articles that cross agricultural innovation, market stability, and human nutrition, with explicit links to dietary outcomes. Articles should focus on tangible impacts on dietary diversity, affordability, nutrient adequacy, or nutrition among vulnerable groups. We particularly encourage studies involving low-income households, at-risk populations, urban and rural food insecure communities, or regions under climatic and economic stress. Submissions may address, but are not limited to, the following themes:- Adoption of climate-smart and nutrition sensitive agricultural innovations- Supply chain shocks and their impact on food availability, nutrient retention, and diet quality- Price dynamics of nutritious foods, affordability of healthy diets, and their influence on food purchasing- Consumer behaviour, food choice, and dietary transitions under stressors such as climate or inflation- Policies, governance, and business models that foster integrated, resilient, and nutrition enhancing food systems Topic editors: Ourania Tremma, Vilma Xhakollari Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/80055/building-nutrition-sensitive-and-climate-resilient-food-systems-innovation-adoption-supply-chain-shocks-price-dynamics-and-consumer-behaviour
