Building resilience through sustainability: innovative strategies in agricultural systems - Volume II
Agricultural systems worldwide are increasingly challenged by climate change, land degradation, biodiversity loss, water scarcity, and rising socio-economic pressures. Ensuring agri-food and nutritional security while maintaining environmental sustainability requires transformative approaches that enhance resilience, resource-use efficiency, and adaptive capacity across agricultural landscapes. In recent years, sustainable agricultural intensification, regenerative farming, circular bioeconomy approaches, climate-smart technologies, and ecosystem-based management have emerged as promising pathways toward resilient agri-food systems. The first volume of this RT successfully highlighted innovative strategies for improving sustainability and resilience in agricultural systems, attracting strong global engagement from researchers working across agronomy, soil science, climate adaptation, integrated farming systems, and environmental management. Building upon this momentum, Volume II aims to expand the scientific dialogue by addressing emerging innovations and interdisciplinary solutions that can support sustainable agricultural transitions under rapidly changing climatic and socio-economic conditions. This RT welcomes contributions that explore innovative and practical approaches for strengthening resilience in agricultural systems through sustainable management of soil, water, nutrients, biodiversity, and energy resources. Particular emphasis will be placed on regenerative agriculture, conservation agriculture, climate-smart farming, agroecology, integrated farming systems, precision nutrient and water management, carbon sequestration, circular nutrient economy, waste valorization, bio-inputs, and ecosystem service enhancement. The RT also encourages studies examining policy interventions, socio-economic dimensions, farmer adaptation strategies, gender-inclusive approaches, and sustainable food system transitions. The RT seeks to provide a multidisciplinary platform for researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and development organizations to share scientific advances, innovative technologies, and evidence-based solutions that improve agricultural productivity while reducing environmental footprints and enhancing climate resilience. Contributions integrating field experimentation, modeling approaches, life-cycle assessment, participatory research, and systems analysis are particularly encouraged.By bringing together diverse perspectives from across disciplines and regions, this collection aims to advance knowledge on resilient and sustainable agricultural systems capable of addressing global challenges related to agri-food security, climate adaptation, ecosystem restoration, and rural livelihoods. The outcomes of this RT are expected to support the development of science-based policies and scalable innovations that contribute toward achieving sustainable development goals and fostering resilient agri-food futures.Agricultural systems are facing unprecedented challenges due to climate change, declining soil health, water scarcity, biodiversity loss, and increasing pressure on agri-food production systems. These challenges threaten global agri-food and nutritional security while also affecting ecosystem sustainability and farmer livelihoods. In response, there is growing interest in resilient and sustainable agricultural approaches that can enhance productivity while conserving natural resources and reducing environmental impacts. Emerging strategies such as climate-smart agriculture, conservation agriculture, regenerative farming, integrated farming systems, precision nutrient management, and circular bioeconomy approaches are gaining global attention for their potential to strengthen agricultural resilience. Recent advances in ecosystem-based management and resource-efficient farming practices provide new opportunities for transforming agri-food systems toward sustainability. However, further interdisciplinary research is needed to develop scalable, region-specific, and climate-resilient solutions that can support sustainable agricultural transitions under diverse socio-economic and environmental conditions.Despite significant advancements in sustainable agriculture research, important knowledge gaps remain in integrating resilience-oriented innovations across diverse agricultural systems and socio-economic contexts. Many existing studies focus on isolated components such as crop productivity, soil management, climate adaptation, or resource conservation, with limited emphasis on holistic and systems-based approaches that simultaneously address environmental sustainability, economic viability, and social resilience. Furthermore, emerging areas such as circular bioeconomy, carbon-neutral farming, ecosystem service enhancement, and nature-based agricultural solutions remain underexplored in practical and policy-oriented frameworks, particularly in developing and climate-vulnerable regions. The main goal of this RT is to bridge these gaps by bringing together multidisciplinary research that advances innovative, scalable, and climate-resilient agricultural strategies. The collection aims to promote integrated approaches for sustainable management of soil, water, nutrients, biodiversity, and energy resources while improving productivity and livelihood security. It also seeks to highlight recent advances in regenerative farming, bio-based inputs, integrated farming systems, and climate-smart interventions that can accelerate sustainable agricultural transitions and strengthen resilient agri-food systems globally. This RT aims to provide a multidisciplinary platform for advancing innovative strategies that enhance sustainability, resilience, and adaptive capacity in agricultural systems under changing climatic and socio-economic conditions. The collection welcomes contributions integrating agronomic, environmental, technological, socio-economic, and policy perspectives for sustainable agri-food system transformation.Authors are encouraged to submit Original Research, Review Articles, Mini Reviews, Perspectives, Methods, Policy Analyses, and Case Studies addressing themes including, but not limited to:• Climate-smart and regenerative agriculture• Conservation agriculture and sustainable intensification• Soil health, carbon sequestration, and nutrient-use efficiency• Integrated farming systems and circular bioeconomy approaches• Water-saving technologies and resilient irrigation management• Agroecology, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem services• Biofertilizers, biostimulants, and sustainable bio-inputs• Agricultural waste recycling and resource recovery• Climate adaptation, risk management, and resilient food systems• Socio-economic, policy, and governance dimensions of sustainability• Farmer-centric innovations and livelihood resilience strategies Topic editors: Vijay Singh Meena, Hanuman S.
