Built Environment, Human Behavior, and Intelligent Systems for Transportation Safety
Transportation safety is a complex and multidimensional issue shaped by the interactions among the built environment, human behavior, and emerging intelligent transportation systems. With rapid urbanization and the growing adoption of advanced sensing, connectivity, and data-driven technologies, understanding these interactions has become increasingly important for improving urban mobility safety and sustainability. While substantial research has examined transportation safety from the perspectives of infrastructure design, traffic operations, behavioral science, and intelligent systems, these domains are often studied in isolation. This fragmentation limits a comprehensive understanding of how built-environment characteristics influence road-user psychological processes, behavioral decision-making, and ultimately crash risk outcomes.Despite significant advances in transportation infrastructure and intelligent mobility technologies, road traffic crashes remain a persistent global challenge. Transportation safety is increasingly understood as the result of complex interactions among the built environment, human behavior, and intelligent transportation systems. However, existing research often examines these dimensions in isolation, limiting a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms through which environmental, psychological, and technological factors jointly influence safety outcomes.Recent advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, connected vehicle technologies, trajectory data analysis, and street-view imagery have created new opportunities to integrate multi-source data and uncover hidden patterns in transportation safety. At the same time, growing attention to traffic psychology, risk perception, and behavioral decision-making has highlighted the importance of understanding how road users respond to different built-environment and traffic conditions. This Research Topic aims to promote interdisciplinary research that integrates built environment analysis, human behavior and traffic psychology, and intelligent transportation systems. The goal is to advance theoretical understanding and methodological innovation in transportation safety, and to support the development of data-driven, human-centered, and technology-enabled solutions for safer urban mobility.Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:• Built environment and transportation safety• Traffic psychology, risk perception, and behavioral decision-making• Human factors and road-user behavior• Vulnerable road users and micromobility safety• Road design, street environment, and crash risk analysis• Spatial and environmental determinants of traffic crashes• Machine learning, artificial intelligence, and computer vision for safety assessment• Connected and automated transportation systems• Data-driven traffic safety management and risk prediction• Human-centered transportation infrastructure and urban mobility• Vulnerable road user safety Topic editors: Renteng Yuan, Zhipeng Peng, Shengxuan Ding Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/84021/built-environment-human-behavior-and-intelligent-systems-for-transportation-safety
